Gunhild Hoffmeister

Gunhild Hoffmeister (born 6 July 1944 in Forst) is a retired East German middle distance runner who specialized in the 800 and 1500 metres.
At the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich she won the silver medal in the 1500 metres. She then won her second medal at the games in the 800m by finishing third. Together with Hans Grodotzki she is the only German runner who has won two medals at the same Olympic Games. She returned to the next Olympics in Montreal 1976 where she again finished second in the 1500 m, taking her Olympic tally to 3 medals.
Her personal best time in 1500 metres was 4:01,4 minutes, achieved in July 1976 in Potsdam. This places her ninth on the German all-time list, behind Christiane Wartenberg, Hildegard Körner, Angelika Zauber, Andrea Lange, Ulrike Klapezynski, Beate Liebich, Kristina da Fonseca-Wollheim and Brigitte Kraus.〔(Microsoft Word - Ewige DLV-Bestenliste.doc )〕
Hoffmeister competed for the sports club SC Cottbus during her active career.
